None of this diminishes the excellent, varied and amazing game within, but just how amazing that is depends on when you last slipped into the tights of New York’s favourite web head. Untethered from endless continuity with a focused lens on these particular Spider-folk, the game can pull inspiration from iconic arcs like the origin of Venom and “Kraven’s Last Hunt,” while maintaining unexpected twists and impactful moments.
Different Combat Playstyles
As with most games, the choice to stick with stealth attacks will almost aways slow down the gameplay and result in most players triggering fisticuffs just to get back to the action. Thankfully, the team at Insomniac seem to have realized this, creating very few scenarios where the stealth is forced outside of mini-game sequences and, of course, Mary Jane. He’s working on his college admissions essay with the help of his Spider-tutor and has finally gotten a hang of the superhero schtick. It’s all going well for the duo until a new threat emerges, a seemingly unstoppable killer named Kraven, appears out of the blue on a mission to have the perfect hunt, leaving a trail of super-powered bodies in his wake.

Game director Ryan Smith says that this was designed to create “a sense of familiarity” between the characters while also giving them unique abilities. Miles still has signature bio-electric abilities that allow him to pack a powerful punch or activate optical camouflage, but in comparison, Peter is far more brutal with his new symbiote-enhanced skillset. In between the action, Spider-Man 2 tries hard to find novelty in smaller moments and simpler gameplay loops, to varying levels of success. It’s odd to say that some of these minor moments would be spoilers, but it’s best to discover them for yourself, as each is inserted to change things up in a way that surprises the player. It’s enough to say that a few sequences of stealth, non-powered locomotion through the city, and memorable evenings out with friends all act as palate cleansers. While these sequences often serve the story well, I’m not always sold on the accompanying gameplay.
Much like in comics, the video game version of Taskmaster is a ruthless mercenary who uses his ability to copy the movements of others to train henchmen and attack superheroes. There are other slower moments throughout the main story that are hit-and-miss. A flashback with Peter and Harry breaking into their high school leads to some fun and creative stealth moments, with Peter able to utilize his still-new spider powers to avoid detection. Many of the slower moments with Peter and Harry are great thanks to the emotional hook they come with, but there are also moments that feel like time-wasters and aren’t really fleshed out, like the Coney Island segment and its one-note mini-games. Unfortunately, these pacing issues also extend to many of the game’s side quests. While strong tech doesn’t inherently make a great game, Insomniac proves how much of a difference it can make.
The only thing better than one Spider-Man is two Spider-Men, and with the reveal trailer hinting at some sort of tag-team action, fans have begun speculating that the sequel will have some form of co-op functionality. For its part, Insomniac has so far only referred to Spider-Man 2 as a single-player game. “We’re so thrilled to continue the journey of both Peter Parker and Miles Morales in their most epic single-player adventure yet,” Insomniac’s Ryan Schneider said in a PS Blog post last year.
