Bluepoint Games’ previous work was well done but this is truly stellar. I don’t envy the team trying to figure out how their next project will be even better but I certainly look forward to it. The downside to the great power that the Blueblood Sword has to offer comes at the price of being very specific with the type of build a player goes for. A player needs to be running a luck build to really get the most out of this weapon, but they will find that it is very powerful.

See, the Old Monk is a unique boss in Demon’s Souls which can actually be controlled by another player if they invade your world at the right time. It’s a brilliant use of the series’ PvP mechanics that has been incredibly difficult to properly experience in the years since Demon’s Souls‘ official servers went offline. Well, the remake lets you experience the proper version of the Old Monk boss fight, which also benefits from better visuals, enhanced controls, and a crystal clear soundtrack. The Invader killer build is to take down the invaders in complete stealth mode using a cloak to stay hidden. This temple knight class build has 938 body form and 656 soul form HP.

Do not miss this masterpiece at all, of course, if you like to be challenged. The recently released Demon’s Souls remake on PlayStation 5, like the 2018 Shadow of the Colossus reboot, is difficult to talk about. The level design and moment-to-moment play experience of the original game is re-created with a lavish faithfulness, with only a few tweaks that are largely unnoticeable and generally enhance the play.

Whatever one might say about Bluepoint’s remake, one thing that absolutely needs to be acknowledged is just how amazing the game really looks. I could listen to them all day, and players will get a huge dose of nostalgia as they are summoned into another player’s world to the ever familiar chime. No complaints here, but you will note this means some sounds are different from what you remember. The music of Demon’s Souls has always been the best of any Souls game to date, and this still holds true in the Remake. You simply won’t find better boss music anywhere in the gaming industry than Demon’s Souls.

Technologies like ray tracing allow games to embrace detailed, subtle lighting effects that are both painterly and fairly legible, a must for clear design. And the expanded processing ability means games can focus on small details in a way that simply wasn’t possible before. To wit, Demon’s Souls is in love with the movement of tiny pieces of fabric or shreds of armor, or the way destructible environments can break. You’ve never seen a more lavish barrel-breaking simulator in your life. You’ve never seen a shirt move in the wind like this, not in a game. This pursuit of realism is an oddly modern invention, but one that’s come to dominate the medium.

On that note, a flash back to Demon’s Souls’ frame-rate on PS3 is a great reminder that there is a lot of room for improvement. From the very first areas in Boletaria, you could count on a drop to 12 frames per second every time a dragon wreaks havoc on those initial bridges. The combination of multiple enemies, broad draw distance, and lots of full-res alpha for fire, really hammered Sony’s machine. And while there’s really no confirmation on the remake’s frame-rate targets, the 30fps trailer encode at least shows no drops. We’ve waited a long time for this – a whole console generation in fact – but a revamped rendition of Demon’s Souls is finally coming, spearheading the line-up for Sony’s next generational leap in gaming.
